What the Boss Makes: GoPro CEO Nick Woodman is Silicon Valley's best-paid

What the Boss Makes: GoPro CEO Nick Woodman is Silicon Valley's best-paid - San Jose Mercury News

SAN MATEO -- Leave it to the thrill-seeking inventor of the GoPro action camera to rocket to the top of Silicon Valley's highest-paid chief executives last year.

GoPro CEO Nick Woodman earned $77.4 million in compensation, making him the best-paid CEO in the Bay Area, according to What the Boss Makes, the annual Equilar Silicon Valley CEO Pay Study conducted for the Bay Area News Group.

The 40-year-old Silicon Valley native hit the jackpot when the video camera company he founded after a 2002 surfing trip went public last summer.

His pay at GoPro grew more than 4,000 percent, nearly all due to stock awards, and catapulted him above perennial moneymaker Larry Ellison of Oracle, who made $67.3 million last year -- a 14 percent cut from 2013.

The annual Bay Area list is typically topped by a mix of billionaire tech founders -- such as Ellison and Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff -- and hired execs who run legacy giants such as Wells Fargo and Chevron. But it can also fluctuate wildly as companies rise, fall, change leaders or dole out seven-figure stock grants one year and none the next.

In the 2013 study, Zynga's CEO Don Mattrick was second only to Ellison, but Mattrick didn't make the top 50 last year. His compensation totaled $8.2 million, down from $58 million in 2013, when he was hired to turn around the troubled San Francisco gamemaker. It didn't work, and he abruptly stepped down this spring.

Another aspiring turnaround chief, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, saw her pay rise 69 percent to $42.1 million, which placed her at No. 3 on the Bay Area list and the best-paid female chief executive in the country. Much of the spike was tied to grants awarded back in 2012 to lure her to Yahoo from Google, but they only took effect last year and ballooned in value thanks to Yahoo's big stake in Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba. Mayer's $28.2 million in option awards last year and $11.8 million in stock awards supplemented a $1 million salary.

Fourth on the list was Benioff, who made $39.9 million, mostly in option awards, running the San Francisco cloud computing company he cofounded in 1999. Fifth was software maker NetSuite's CEO, Zachary Nelson, whose salary rose 153 percent to $31.6 million. His $28 million stock award was the second-largest after GoPro's Woodman, and the two will have plenty of opportunity to share advice on what to do with that money soon: GoPro and NetSuite are building new campuses across the street from one another in San Mateo.

Sixth, at $24.8 million, was John Hammergren, longtime CEO of San Francisco medical product wholesaler McKesson.

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman ranked seventh with $19.6 million. Women were poorly represented on the list, just 10 out of 175, but four of them -- Whitman, Mayer and retail executives Laura Alber of Williams-Sonoma (No. 21, at $14.7 million) and Barbara Renter of Ross Stores (No. 27, at $12.1 million) -- were on the high end.

Rounding out the top 10 were Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf, with $19.3 million; Gilead CEO John Martin, with just under $19 million; and Chevron CEO John Watson, with $18.6 million.

Conspicuously absent from the top of the list were some of the region's best-known tech magnates, such as Larry Page, Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk.

"These CEOs may be expected to be flush with cash, but they're ultimately taking home far less than most of their peers in Silicon Valley," said Dan Marcec of Equilar, the Redwood City-based firm that tracks executive compensation and provided the data for this newspaper.

Of the 175 CEOs measured in the study, the chief executives of Google, Facebook and Tesla ranked in the bottom 15, along with the CEOs of Pandora, Yelp, Twitter, SolarCity and Trulia. None of those CEOs received option awards, and their compensation ranged from nothing to $610,000 for Zuckerberg, who had a $1 salary but accepted Facebook-chartered private flights and other perks that count toward total compensation. The study does not measure net worth.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was No. 42, at $9.2 million, about 117 percent more than he made the previous year.

Median salary was about $600,000. Only two CEOs received salaries above $2 million: Reed Hastings at Netflix made $2.96 million, just ahead of Stumpf at Wells philadelphia diet doctor Fargo, who made $2.8 million. But stock awards pushed Stumpf's total compensation to No. 8, at $19.3 million, and Hastings to No. 35, with $11.1 million.

How long Woodman ranks at or near the top of the list depends on many factors, from sales performance to stock price and whatever next big thing goes public in the coming years. But with 4.5 million restricted stock options awarded to him shortly before the IPO, he has even bigger gains on the way if his company does well.

"We work very, very hard," Woodman said during a recent conference call with shareholders reporting GoPro's quarterly earnings, speaking not just of management but of a growing workforce of more than 1,300 people. "We run fast and we run hard and it's working."

American Artist Everett Shinn

The Hippodrome, London (Everett Shinn, 1902)Everett Shinn was born on November 6, 1876 to a Quaker family in Woodstown, New Jersey. He studied mechanical drawing in Philadelphia at first -- a pursuit which he soon found rather boring -- then enrolled at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Shinn also had a job with the Philadelphia Press by age seventeen, working as a "visual reporter" who quick-sketched interesting, newsworthy events. At this point in time, photography had not yet become the main source of images for newspapers and cameras were too cumbersome and unreliable, giving an edge to artists who could rush out and vividly depict any exciting happenings.

Everett and The Eight

While in Philadelphia, Shinn became part of an artistic circle that initially included painters Robert Henri, John Sloan, William Glackens and George Luks. Collectively, this group would start the Ashcan School (alternately spelled as Ash Can School) movement, intent on portraying true scenes of American life -- with American urban life being the primary focus. The group would soon be rounded out by Maurice Prendergast, Ernest Lawson and Arthur B. Davies and was officially known as The Eight, but the artists were often called Ashcan painters by critics commenting derisively on The Eight's "grimy" or "gritty" sources of inspiration.

As a visual reporter, Shinn had a keen eye for compelling real-life moments and was able to produce excellent work for The Eight, capturing fights on the street or tenement scenes. But in truth, Shinn was even more intrigued by the glamour of the city: the rich pageant of society people, the cultural institutions, alluring department store windows, elegant restaurants, and especially the theater. Paintings such as The Hippodrome, London and The Vaudeville Act show Shinn's fascination with actresses and medical weight loss philadelphia actors, costumes, lighting and staging, along with the crowds who filled the theater and music hall seats. Shinn's 1900 trip to Europe further broadened his perspective and palette, and marked a shift from his predominant use of pastels to oil paint.

Many Talents and Marriages

Shinn soon left Philadelphia to work for the New York World newspaper. Most of The Eight would eventually gravitate to New York as well, but beyond that circle Shinn befriended architect and bon vivant Stanford White. White, whom Shinn called a "red-headed wild man" of great influence, helped Shinn secure several mural project commissions and meet Manhattan's elite. A 1901 self-portrait shows how the sharp-dressed, handsome and charming Shinn enjoyed developing his artistic persona, a process which he once humorously described as "great fun. being an artist. with temperament."

Shinn's Greenwich Village studio had a theater annex which Shinn himself constructed, and along with a group known as The Waverly Players, Shinn wrote his own plays, built the sets and took part in the productions. Later, he would apply the same flair to art directing work on Hollywood films.

Shinn's fondness for the opposite sex led to four marriages, including his first to fellow artist Florence Scovel Shinn. Florence was a member of The Waverly Players and would later become an early New Age theory guru and author of The Game of Life and How to Play It. Everett's marriages, divorces, romances and various talents may have kept him from fully concentrating on a serious art career, but beyond that he did have a rather full and colorful life.

Legacy

The youngest of The Eight, Everett Shinn was also the last survivor of the group, succumbing to lung cancer in 1953. His work has experienced renewed interest in recent years and can be seen at many American museums, including The Art Institute of Chicago, The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and The Yale University Art Gallery.

How To Lose Weight Fast and Safely - WebMD

WebMD Feature Archive

Working on weight loss? Then you probably want results -- fast.

Let me save you some time: skip the fad diets. Their results don't last. And you have healthier options you can start on -- today!

fruit and <a href=weight loss philadelphia vegetables on scale"/>

You can safely lose 3 or more pounds a week at home with a healthy diet and lots of exercise, says weight loss counselor Katherine Tallmadge, RD.

How to Lose Weight Fast

If you burn 500 more calories than you eat every day for a week, you should lose about 1-2 pounds.

If you want to lose weight faster, you'll need to eat less and exercise more.

For instance, if you take in 1,050 to 1,200 calories a day, and exercise for one hour per day, you could lose 3-5 pounds in the first week, or more if you weigh more than 250 pounds. It's very important not to cut calories any further -- that's dangerous.

Limiting salt and starches may also mean losing more weight at first -- but that's mostly fluids, not fat.

"When you reduce sodium and cut starches, you reduce fluids and fluid retention, which can result in up to 5 pounds of fluid loss when you get started," says Michael Dansinger, MD, of NBC's

The Biggest Loser

show.

Diets for Fast Weight Loss

Dansinger recommends eating a diet that minimizes starches, added sugars, and animal fat from meat and dairy foods. For rapid weight loss, he recommends focusing on fruits, veggies, egg whites, soy products, skinless poultry breasts, fish, shellfish, nonfat dairy foods, and 95% lean meat.

Here are more tips from Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, author of

The Flexitarian Diet

:

Eat vegetables to help you feel full.

Drink plenty of water.

Get tempting foods out of your home.

Stay busy -- you don't want to eat just because you're bored.

Eat only from a plate, while seated at a table. No grazing in front of the 'fridge.

Don't skip meals.

Keeping a food journal -- writing down everything you eat -- can also help you stay on track.

"Even if you write it down on a napkin and end up throwing it away, the act of writing it down is about being accountable to yourself and is a very effective tool for weight loss," says Bonnie Taub Dix, MA, RD, author of

Top 5 Best Episodes of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Are you wondering what the top 5 best episodes of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" the popular television show on FX? This show has now completed its 8th season and has become one of the funniest and most loved shows on television, growing a cult following. The show centers around "The Gang," a group of dysfunctional friends who run a bar in South Philly, who are basically some of the worst people imaginable - they are selfish, egotistical and basically just crazy - which makes the show pretty funny if you ask me.

The TV show was created by Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day, and also features Danny DeVito as Frank Reynolds and Kaitlin Olsen as "Sweet Dee" Deandra Reynolds. Sunny has definitely vaulted the careers of these actors, with Charlie Day receiving a number of film roles (Horrible Bosses!) and even Danny DeVito saying on several occassions that he's proud of being on the show.

With season 8 now in the books, there are quite a number of episodes now that fans would call "the best of the best," with a total of 94 episodes currently filmed to date! I've tried to list what I consider the top 5 best episodes of It's Always Sunny, but feel free to disagree if you must!

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Episodes - What Makes One Great?

In my opinion, an episode of It's Always Sunny that is thought to be "the best" must be the following:

1) Original (meaning that it's the first time the cast does something or it is original to the show, because sometimes they repeat things such as a group performance...)

2) It must be absolutely hilarious but also have a strong story, something that not every episode

has in my opinion.

3) And...it must have an EPIC ending, something that really catches you off guard or leaves you on the floor laughing!

Without further ado....

The Top 5 Greatest Episodes of

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"

#5 - Underage Drinking: A National Concern

(Season 1, Ep. 3)

This is the episode where the gang sees that underaged kids are drinking in the bar and somehow all of them get invited to a high school prom. They reminisce on their high school days and some of the exchanges between them are absolutely priceless.

I consider this one the number five best It's Always Sunny episode of all-time, for a couple of reasons.

First, the gang runs a bar and seeing underage drinking going on at that bar was absolutely destined to happen on this show. We knew it was coming, yet they executed it perfectly.

I also felt like we really got to know the characters better in this episode. You have to realize that this was only the third episode EVER in the show and I felt like exchanges such as this one were not only hysterical, but important!

Charlie Kelly: Remember how great high school was? All those parties, no responsibilities...

Mac: High school was the best.

Dennis Reynolds: Do you guys even remember high school? I don't think it happened the way you think.

Mac: What do you mean?

Dennis Reynolds: What I mean Mac, is that the only reason you got to hang out with me and the other cool kids is because you sold us all weed. Everybody thought that you were an asshole.

Mac: I was popular!

Charlie Kelly: What are you talking about? Mac was very popular. And I like to think that I was pretty popular myself.

Mac: You were!

Dennis Reynolds: No, he was. You were popular like a... like a clown is popular.

Charlie Kelly: What?

Dennis Reynolds: Yeah, you made us all laugh, and all the guys knew that you couldn't sleep with their girlfriends.

Mac: Whatever dude. The only reason you got laid is because you dated freshmen.

Charlie Kelly: Yeah, yeah, yeah. You've always had that creepy thing with younger girls.

Dennis Reynolds: I do not.

This episode had be laughing from beginning to end. Seeing Sweet Dee hook up with the high school senior jock was priceless. And I really loved the ending where the song "Forever Young" plays while Charlie dances with the high school girl.

Again, this episode is quite tame compared to the later episodes, but that doesn't mean it isn't any good! In fact, I consider it one of the best for the constant laughs, the quotes which helped us understand the characters better and... the perfect ending!

#4 - Who Got Dee Pregnant?

 (Season 6, Ep. 7)

"The Gang gets a real 'scare' after Dee reveals she's pregnant, forcing the guys to recall their last hazy Halloween Party to determine if one of them might be the father."

This episode took on special meaning because actress Kaitlin Olsen was actually pregant during filming of the show with husband and co-star, Rob McElhenney.

These things tend to happen often with TV actresses, and I'm sure the cast wasn't really expecting this to happen, but Sunny absolutely nailed it out of the park with this episode!

So, you do think that one of the Gang got Sweet Dee pregnant... I won't spoil the rest. Just know that this episode has some of the funniest Sunny moments in it. We see at the end all of the possible fathers of Sweet Dee's child which include some pretty hysterical characters such as

Some memorable quotes:

Mac: I browned out that evening.

Frank: Browned out? What's browned out?

Mac: It's when you drink so much that everything goes brown. It's not as sever as a black out because I remember bits and pieces. I call it browning out.

Dennis: It's fatness, plain and simple. It's a person becoming fat before your very eyes.

Charlie: And I don't even know how to make the bird jokes anymore. They no longer apply.

Dee: I'm not fat, I'm pregnant!

Mac: I feel like you say that all the time now.

Frank: You better do yourself a favor and flush it out.

Charlie: Wait a second, you definitely said that before.

Mac: Since we're all saying things we say all the time. I'll just reiterate. Dee, we don't care about you, or your body, or that baby bird.

Another hysterical scenes - Sweet Dee as an Ostrich in Mac's story (You really need to be a fan to understand the humor here!). The McPoyle twins hinting at the possibility at Dennis being the father (and really getting excited about it).

And then the ending, which was absolutely perfect!

#3 - Charlie and Mac Die (Part 1 and 2)

  (Season 4, Ep. 5)

This could have been either number two or one, easily.

"After Mac's father is released from prison, he and Charlie freak out and decide that the only way out is to fake their own deaths, which they do by destroying Dee's car. Meanwhile, Dennis and Frank probe the origins of a mysterious hole that has appeared in the bathroom at Paddy's."

This episode has some of the funniest scenes in the entire show, such as:

- The opening scene of the episode at the courthouse (Mr. Kelly, you said that the defendant threatened that if you didn't, and I quote "Stick things up your butt, he would rape your butt until the room stinks...)

- The gloryhole scene with Dennis and Frank (enough said!)

- The scene where Mac drives Dee's car into the brick wall.

- The fake funeral scene for Mac and Charlie, and they are watching their funeral.

- Basically every other scene in the episode.

#3 Best Sunny Episode - Mac and Charlie Die

# 2 - The Waitress is Getting Married

 (Season 5, Ep. 5)

"Dee discovers that the waitress Charlie is obsessed with is getting married to her ex-boyfriend and plots to derail the wedding, while Mac, Frank and Dennis try to get Charlie back on the dating scene."

I chose this episode as number 2 because it is Charlie's funniest episode, and I have always felt that Charlie is one of the best character's on the show, if not the best.

Charlie is so stupid and funny, yet so innocent and lovable at the same time. He loves the waitress with a disturbing passion, but the waitress has made it very clear she has no feelings for him.

This episode has some of the funniest scenes in the show and without a doubt some of the best quotes!

"I'm a full-on rapist." - Charlie trying to say he's a "Philanthropist."

"I'll take a milk steak, boiled over hard with your finest jelly beans, raw of course." - Charlie being stupid on his blind date.

The scenes of Mac and Dennis setting up Charlie an online dating profile are absolutely hysterical.

And then of course, the epic ending, where Charlie shows some real heart. Charlie delivers a box of hornets to the guy who ultimately jilted his dream girl. Although he knows he'll never get her, Charlie was really nice here. You never really see the gang do something like this because they are such terrible, selfish people (which is funny) but this was a raw moment of decency.

It's Charlie's best episode, one of the funniest in the series, and has one of the sweetest moments in a tv series not known for sweetness... therefore I put it as #2!

#2 Best Sunny Episode - The Waitress is Getting Married

What is the best episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia?"

Well, this is it in my opinion:

#1 - "The Nightman Cometh!!!!"

(Season 4, Ep. 13)

"Charlie stages a rock opera based on his song "Nightman," and recruits the rest of the gang to help him with it."

Just think of the most ridiculous musical of all-time... and this is it.

This is a really, really special episode. First, few of the scenes take place at the bar. You normally see the gang spend most their time there. And the episode still works out really well.

Secondly, the gang performs a full-blown, originalmusical - and it works! Imagine this: Charlie writes a full musical (for reasons unknown until the ending of the episode) and then the gang kind of messes it all up and does what they want with it, changing the lyrics and dances.

Knowning this before seeing the episode, I knew it was a hit-or-miss type of episode. They just hadn't really done anything like this before. But the gang really hit it out of the park with this episode. The laughter just kept coming, and the musical scenes were truly epic!

It really is hard to explain just how funny and strange this episode was. I think true fans of the show understand what I mean by this. The lyrics of the musical are absolutely hysterical and Charlie's angry reaction to the gang messing up the songs is great. You can tell he tried really hard to make this musical work - and it really was the worst thing, ever.

Dee Reynolds: [singing] Sonny boy/little boy/baby boy/I want to touch you boy... Sonny boy/little boy/baby boy/want to make love to you boy...

Frank Reynolds: [singing] You got to pay the troll toll if you want to get into this boy's hole!

Charlie: I'm going to smack your face off your face.

And then, of course, the ending, when we learn the motivation behind the musical...and what happens is pretty hilarious. I won't spoil it for you...

Charlie: "That's it, show's over. Go home."

But the biggest reason I loved this episode - it was so funny that the cast decided to take it to the actual stage, performing the musical to live audiences (Tickets sold out rather fast!). Unfortunately I was not able to see this episode performed live, but you can still watch it live in the season 4 DVD specials!

Weight Loss Surgery In North Dakota

Obesity is epidemic here in North Dakota. Across our state, the number of overweight and obese individuals is rapidly increasing. In the Peace Garden State alone some 60% of the population is overweight or obese and among North Dakotas American Indian communities, obesity prevalence is even higher.

This epidemic is costing us more than just our health its costing us big money. According to recent data from the U.S. Public Health Service Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the cost per taxpayer for obesity-related expenditures in North Dakota amounts to over $220 annually.

And of course the costs of obesity are not limited to dollars and cents. Obesity costs lives: of preventable diseases, only smoking kills more of us in the United States. It may also lead to other life-threatening illnesses, called co-morbidities, like heart disease, hypertension, and most commonly, Type 2 diabetes.

North Dakotas Weight Problem

Obesity is a disease, with the primary symptom being that a persons weight is significantly above what is medically considered a healthy norm. A healthy weight is determined in terms of individual body mass index (BMI). BMI equals ones weight in pounds multiplied by 703, then divided by ones height in inches, squared. If a person has a BMI of more than 30, he or she is considered medically obese.

Changing ones BMI can be difficult. Some people try to lose excess weight by means of drugstore-paperback-type diets, infomercial exercise programs, or quack weight-loss pills. The truth is, many people do lose significant amounts weight this way for a time. The vast majority not only quickly regain those extra pounds, but because they have messed up their metabolism, they end up heavier than they were to start.

The only way to successfully treat the disease of obesity is through medical care, based upon a complete change in lifestyle and eating habits. For most, a medically-supervised weight loss program is the ideal means by which to accomplish this. However, weight loss surgery is an option for those who cannot lose sufficient weight though standard weight loss philadelphia diet and exercise programs. Bariatric surgery has been proven to help resolve obesity-related health problems for individuals who are not amenable to other forms of treatment. It can also help patients to reach their ideal weight and lessen their chances of developing weight-related health problems in the future.

The three main types of weight loss surgery are malabsorptive, restrictive, and combination. All work by surgically altering the patients digestive tract in a manner which makes overconsumption of food physically impossible. This allows a patient to lose a large amount of weight in a relatively short time-frame, which for many people can mean the difference between life and death. However, each form of surgery exposes the patient to different risks, including the possibility of major postoperative complications, such as anemia, ulcers, internal hernias, calcium deficiencies, and gallstones.

And, weight loss surgery is not a cure-all, nor is it an option to be undertaken lightly. Patients unwilling to effect a complete change in lifestyle or follow postoperative instructions may regain any weight they lose. Those considering obesity surgery should consult with their primary care physician to discuss the different treatment options, as well as the risks and possible outcomes of any bariatric procedure.

We Can Win

North Dakota is a great state, but we North Dakotans must face this crisis if its going to stay that way. We can overcome the problems caused by widespread obesity in our great state -- by working together.

Weight loss success: Woman inspires thousands

Story highlightsDanyeil Durrant started to lose weight to prevent a heart attackShe works out at the gym daily and inspires others to do the same"I am very proud of my muscles," she saysIn 2012, after years of alternating between dieting and splurging, Durrant had gone from "chubby little girl" to a morbidly obese woman. The 5-foot-2 paralegal from Sebastian, Florida, weighed 363 pounds.

She had quit going to amusement parks and concerts because she couldn't fit in the seats or walk without knee pain, and she couldn't get in her car without losing her breath. On airplanes, she had to fly first class and still use a seat belt extender because she was too big for coach seats. She took showers because she couldn't lift her body out of the bathtub anymore.

Durrant's doctor told her that her cholesterol was so bad "that I was going to have a heart attack within 10 years if I didn't change my ways."

Besides the physical toll, her self-worth was shot.

"I spent 30 years of my life thinking that if I could just lose this weight, then my life could begin, then I'd make the cheerleading squad, then I could take that vacation, then I would meet the man of my dreams, etc.," said Durrant. "I never felt like I was enough."

Durrant, now 41, attributes much of her weight gain to dieting at such a young age.

"It taught me that deprivation was the only way to lose weight, and that food was bad," she said. "I thought I was fatter than I actually was, and I never developed (a healthy) self-esteem."

She felt helpless, knowing her life was at risk but not knowing how to change.

August 3, 2012, marked the start of her new life. That night, she was at a dinner for her sister's birthday, "pigging out on the fattiest foods possible," when her sister mentioned she had joined Weight Watchers and was having success with it.

Durrant joined Weight Watchers the next morning with her best friend and never looked back. Through the company's points system, she learned how to create a balanced meal. She found the system wasn't as restrictive as many other diets and allowed her to enjoy foods like steak as long as they were eaten in moderation.

Durrant stopped eating fast food and gave up soda. She began to appreciate -- and eventually, to love -- fruits and vegetables.

Most importantly, she eliminated a lot of guilt by realizing that eating something unhealthy didn't equal failure.

"In the past, if I ate what I considered non-diet food, I thought I had ruined everything, and I would quit whatever diet I was on," Durrant said. "Now I know that I can still occasionally splurge, attend celebrations, go to restaurants ... because I have learned how to choose something healthy anywhere I go."

She would go on to lose 150 pounds.

In the first couple of months, Durrant's low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, cholesterol dropped 37 points as she made more positive changes to her eating habits and began to spend more time in the gym. This health change was a major landmark in preventing the heart attack that her doctor had presented as a very real threat. But Durrant was not done making changes.

From the very beginning, becoming physically strong was just as important to Durrant as losing a lot of weight.

In January 2014, she made a New Year's resolution to go to the gym every day for a year. She has stayed faithful so far.

"Even if I'm out of town I make sure to go before I leave or I rush back to get in my workout before midnight," she said. "I feel unstoppable."

Durrant has fitness equipment at home that she uses as well: a punching bag, an ab lounger, hand weights, kettlebells and workout DVDs. She tries to get in about five miles of cardio every day, as well as upper and lower body weight exercises. She has recently discovered a passion for weightlifting and bench pressing.

"I am very proud of my muscles," she said. "I stare at them all the time."

Durrant's boyfriend, Joe Goshen, has been her biggest cheerleader. He said she's always been beautiful, but she "now has a million different smiles, each one more beautiful than the last."

She weighs 213 pounds and is down to a size 12. Her ultimate goal is to weigh "150 pounds of muscle."

Although Durrant has changed most dramatically on the outside, she likes to acknowledge the internal changes as well.

"I am not afraid of what people think of me. I am not afraid of social situations," she said. "Basically, I am not afraid."

She said her newfound self-confidence has really helped her focus on the importance of even the smallest moment.

"When the weekend comes, I'm up with the birds and ready to get out of medical weight loss philadelphia the house and make every moment count, instead of lying in bed with no energy, watching TV and eating."

Durrant decided to create a Facebook page called "Get Down with Dani" to both inspire others and to keep herself accountable for achieving her weight loss goals.

"I have had the pleasure of meeting the strongest people that I've ever known," she said. "They have embraced me every step of my journey and allowed me to inspire and motivate them to start their own weight loss journeys."

Initially, Durrant said she challenged her followers to work out with her every day for a month, and more than 300 people joined her in accomplishing that goal.

"Now I have a challenge group with thousands of women, and a few good men, who are all 'Down with Dani' and excited for every new challenge that I give them," she said. "We have made weight loss fun."

She said it's an amazing feeling to be the one doing the inspiring and motivating, when two years ago, "all I wanted to do was hide in a corner and cry."

"My struggle with obesity is the one thing in life that I always failed at," she said. "To become an inspiration at your greatest failure, that is priceless."

New weight loss shot Saxenda (liraglutide): How well does it work?

Last Updated Jul 2, 2015 8:32 AM EDT

A new injectable drug, aimed at helping obese and seriously overweight people who have other weight-related health conditions, has proven effective in a new round of testing.

The drug, called liraglutide (brand name Saxenda), won FDA approval for use as a weight loss treatment in December, but with a requirement for further testing. The latest study involved 3,700 people from six continents and showed similar results to those in the previous trial: improved weight loss and control of blood sugars, but also several known side effects. The findings are published in this week's New England Journal of Medicine.

"The overall effect of the drug was very good and very comparable or better than the drugs that are now on the market," lead researcher Dr. Xavier Pi-Sunyer of Columbia University Medical Center told CBS News.

"This is a new generation of drug," CBS News medical contributor Dr. Holly Phillips explained on "CBS This Morning." "It's actually been around for a couple of years to treat diabetes but was just approved by the FDA for weight loss in December. So this study really aimed to make sure that it was effective for weight loss."

Study participants were given a reduced-calorie diet and an increased exercise regimen, along with either Saxenda or a placebo. Those who took Saxenda lost an average of 18 and a half pounds over 56 weeks. Those taking a placebo only lost 6 pounds.

That's three times as many pounds lost, but Phillips notes, "In the grand scheme of things, we have to think this is a pretty mild or moderate weight loss, when you compare it to something like gastric bypass or lap-banding, the surgical interventions."

Sixty-three percent of those who received the shot lost more than 5 percent of their body weight, versus 27 percent who used a placebo. And 33 percent lost more than 10 percent of their body weight with Saxenda, versus only 10 percent with the placebo. Users also experienced health benefits such as lower cholesterol, lower blood sugar, and better diabetes control.

The drug "tends to decrease gastric emptying, the emptying of the stomach. And it gives signals to the brain to lower hunger and increase satiety," said Pi-Sunyer.

The drug is given as a daily shot under the skin. Its approval was limited to adults who are obese or who are overweight and have at least one related condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol.

This weight-loss drug is not for casual use. The most common side effects included nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, low blood sugar and loss of appetite. Other rare but serious side effects include pancreas inflammation, gallbladder disease, lowered kidney function, suicidal thoughts, increased heart rate, and possible increased risk of thyroid cancer.

The study was funded by the drug's manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, which was required by the FDA to conduct further safety testing and to keep a 15-year history of cases showing serious side effects.

This is the fourth weight-loss drug approved by the FDA since 2012.

Does anyone have any Bread Machine recipes?

I bought a bread machine last spring.  I used it a few times (mostly just mixes) but then summer came around and I didn't want to use it.  Does anyone have a good recipe?   What I would weight loss doctor philadelphia really love is to make up a "mix" then just add it to the bread machine with some water and yeast (or whatever- just a few ingredients).

Any other ideas for my bread machine?

Feel free to post your recipe as an article and then just link to it in the comments.

Thanks for any ideas!
